Field notes On coastal flats on sand; widely distributed, often dominant. Sap tapped by natives for "lala beer", an alcoholic beverage. Local name: "Lala palm". Lala is a native word, meaning sleep. Lala beer said to be quite potent. Nowhere in the area a fully developed palm was found, due to regular tapping where stem is cut off about 50 cm above the ground. Tapping is the only occupation of the men; the women being responsible for cultivation of crops and other chores
