| Field notes | Massive, solitary, canopy tree palm to 30 m. Internodes 4-6 cm when mature, 25 cm on lower portion of the trunk. Stem diameter 25 cm, rather black in lower portion. Crownshaft c. 110 cm x 25 cm. Sheath 1 m long, purple-brown with copious white waxy indument. Leaves c. 20 in crown, slightly arching, 250-300 cm long including 40 cm petiole. Leaflets c. 50 each side of rachis, arranged regularly, pendulous. Inflorescences 26 (yes - 26!), densly arranged at all aavailable internodes below crownshaft, individual inflorescences 80 cm long including 12 cm peduncle, branched to 2 orders, 12 primary branches. Fruit broadly ellipsoide, 10 mm long, 8 mm wide, ripening red, endosperm homogeneous. Wood used for floor boards. V.N.: Kaaparo, Dialect: Wandama |
