| Field notes | Solitary, single-stemmed, dioecious palm with stem to 5m tall. Stem ventricose with prominent leaf scars, and 8 green leaves in the crown. Several leaves removed by people. Leaves slightly glaucous and costapalmate, costa between 18cm and 29cm long. Petiole green in colour, armed with small black spines, and between 77cm and 106cm long. Lamina divided to 60cm, with between 67 and 70 leaflets. Shortest leaflet between 50cm and 75cm long. Male tree with 5 mature inflorescences, branching to 2 orders, borne axillary.The main use of the palm is in the production of palm wine, which is tapped from the terminal bud.
