| Field notes | Solitary, single-stemmed, dioecious palm with stem to 8m tall. Stem ventricose with prominent leaf scars, and 8 green leaves in the crown. Several leaves removed by people. Leaves slightly glaucous and costapalmate, costa between 18cm and 27cm long. Petiole green in colour, armed with small black spines, and between 107cm and 117cm long. Lamina divided to 60cm, with between 64 and 72 leaflets. Shortest leaflet between 59cm and 77cm long. Female tree with 1 semi-mature infructescence and 3 immature inflorescences, unbranched, borne axillary. Fruits green and with a pointed apex. 9 fruits per rachilla.The main use of the palm is in the production of palm wine, which is tapped from the terminal bud. In addition, leaves are removed for fencing and immature fruits are collected and the endosperm is consumed.Vernacular: rônier, dialect: French |
