Field notes Restinga vegetation on coastal sand with scattered forest with lower trees in more open places. This plant growing in shade of closed restinga on ground. Growing in leaf litter in deep shade of dwarf Attalea. Stem ascending or abbreviated, producing 4-5 mm thick velameniferous roots cataphylls brown-membranous, later net-fibrous. Petiole to 24 cm long, form found growing in full sun with short 1-4 cm long petioles (stature and petiole lenght tend to be longer when growing in shade), wings sometimes red-brown, cross section: Lamina green, margins sometimes red-brown, to 70 cm long, 13 cm broad, above shiny to gleaming, costa shallowly rounded, primary lateral nerves and collecting nerves hardly impressed though visible; below lamina paler, sheeny opaque green, costa prominent, collecting nerves not prominent but visible as green against paler lamina, primary lateral nerves mostly obscured, hardly prominent. Geniculum of petiole very tumid and prominent. Peduncle to 78 cm long, 8 mm thick, young peduncle reddish, spathe pale green with mauve-flushed line down centre of abaxial surface, shortly decurrent. Stipe sometimes red-brown. Young non-fruiting spadix with tepals green, dirty red-brown-flushed, spadix in young fruit with green tepals and apex. Fruits dark red-purple, seeds similar, flattened
