| Field notes | Cespitose understory palm. Stem 5 m long, 8 cm thick; internodes 3 cm long, brown; base of stem with few visible roots. Leaves 12-14 per stem; leaf sheath 58 cm long, open, with 12 cm long black spines; petiole 109 cm long, section round, with 7 cm long black spines; rachis 233 cm long, with 3 cm long black spines; lamina pinnate, 260 cm long, 120 cm wide, hairy; pinnae 32 per side, irregularly inserted in groups of 3, basal pinna 52 cm long, middle pinna 51 cm long, apical pinna 39 cm long. Inflorescence infrafoliar; peduncular bract 40 cm long, brown, woody, with 1.5 cm long black and yellow spines; peduncle 9 cm long, 2.5 cm wide; rachis 10 cm long, 0.1-0.3 cm wide; rachillae 80, 10-16 cm long.
