Identification qualifier  
Field notes Cespitose, understory palm, growing at marging of small lake. Stem 2.5 m high, 4 cm thick; internodes 6 cm long, > stem diameter, brown, rough, spiny; Leaves 4 per stem; sheaths 50 cm long, open; petiole 40 cm long, round in cross section, with black, 7 cm long spines; rachis 97 cm long, with black, 4 cm long spines; lamina pinnate, 112 cm long, 52 cm wide, flat; pinnae 30 per side, irregularly inserted in groups of 3-9, basal pinna 25 cm, middle pinna 27 cm, apical pinna 17.5 cm long. Old infructescence interfoliar; peduncular bract >32 cm long, woody, brown, with black, 1.5 cm long spines; rachis 5 cm long, 0.6 cm thick. Along trail to transect HB1018; UTM 19N-479556-400965.
