| Field notes | Massive solitary tree palm to 25m. Stem diam. 30cm. Internodes 4-5cm. Crown with 19 leaves, each leaf strongly arching with ascending leaflets which droop at their apices. Crownshaft 250cm long x 40cm wide. Sheath 200cm long with thin, easily detached, pale brown tomentum. Leaf 300cm long including 80cm petiole. Leaflets 46 on each side of rachis, arranged regularly. Inflorescences 10, infrafoliar, c.1 m long, horsetail-shaped, rachis highly condensed, with 66 rachillae. Pistillate and staminate flowers white. Fruit ovoid, 15mm long, pericarp thin, red. Leaves for thatch, wood for floor boards, inflorescences for brooms, fru t as a betel nut substitute. Vernacular: Pipi, Dialect: Kotte |
