| Field notes | Herb, to ca. 1 m tall, forming clusters up to 2 m in diam. Rhizome creeping, with densely positioned erect shoots, each with 1-2 leaves. Inflorescence small, pedunculate, with accompanying leaf. Flowers inconspicuous, white. Fruit green, mostly triangular in cross-section with 3 seeds, but occasionally flat with only 2 seeds. Seeds straw-colored with pale bifid aril. Common name: Hagik hik (Catanduanes Bicol language), referring to the heckling sound made by the leaves when they rubble together in the breeze. |
