Field notes Rhizomatous ground herbs, up to 1 m tall. Leaves 2 - 4 per shoot; sheath 9 - 46 cm long, distichous, sparsely white hairs, papery, whitish red to red at base; petiole 26.3 - 33.3 cm long, glabrous, green at above, reddish green basally; pulvinus 7.5 cm, green with yellow ring at base, glabrous; lamina 15 x 12.7 - 47 x 36.5 cm, oblong - elliptic, green light above, below greyish green, apex cuspidate, basis equilateral. Inflorescence interfoliar, erect, peduncle 60 - 69 cm long, glabrous, green; synflorescence capitate, 7 - 8 cm long; primary bract 8.3 x 2.9 cm long, quickly dry on flowering phase, subtending axis base and primary lateral branches with 2 - 3 bracteole (interphyll?) which subtending primary lateral branches base, lateral bract 3 x 1.1 cm long, pale green, yellowing and brown when dry, shape similar with primary bract, spirally arranged; lateral branches spirally arranged, first branches 3 cm long, the next branches very short; flower 2 pairs per special paraclade; fruits 2 - 6 per orders. Flower white, 5 cm long; sepal subulate, unequal in size, 12 - 15 x 0.5 - 2 mm; corolla tube 31 mm long; staminal tube 7 mm longer than corolla tube; corolla lobes 20 x 4 mm; petaloid staminode lobes 2, the first free petaloid staminode lobe (outer staminode) 11 x 12 mm, the second petaloid staminode lobe with small trig appendage (callose staminode) 13 x 19 mm: cucullate staminode 6 x 2 mm, stamen 2 mm long; style 2.5 mm long; ovary 1.5 mm long. Fruits green with vertical pale whitish strip, mature yellowish green, brown when dry, globose - triangular, 10 - 11 mm in diameter, dehiscent, 3 cells, sometimes 1 sterile; seeds 3. 4 mm long, ridges in dorsal; white when young, biack when mature or when fruits are break. Uses: Food packing. Vn. Banuk sba (Moi-Sentani dialect).
