| Field notes | Cultivated ornamental, a common native in the Santa Cruz region but seldom seen as a street tree, and unusual to bloom while so young Sandy soil. Trunk 2.5 m. tall, 20 cm. in diameter, unusual for this species. Some black spines on trunk; trunk with a few remnants of petiole bases at top. Rachis of leaf spiny. Crown with ca. 24 leaves. Two inflorescences with fruits among the green leaves. Spathes brown, ca. 90 cm. Fruit green, it is said that when the fruit is yellow and ripe both the pulp and the nut are eaten, the nut crushed like an "almendra".n.v.: "totai" |
