Field notes Palm caespitose, with approximately 30 stems, 2.5-3 cm in diam. and up to 4 m tall, length of internodes about 4 cm, width of leaf scars 1-1.3 cm. Leaf base 33 cm long, tubular forming a crownshaft, 2.5 cm in diam., rusty brown to dark green, with scattered ramenta, easily removed by scraping, splitting shortly, margin dark brown, desintegrated in 6-7 cm long fibres, colour of young leaf sheath inside crownshaft from yellow to lilac. Petiole 21 cm long, proximal portion shallowly channeled above, the remaining portion subterete to terete, dark green. Leaf blade 122 cm long, rachis 90 cm, number of pinnae 5, dark glossy green and densely covered by epiphyllous lichens above, mat dark green below. Inflorescences 2: one at staminate anthesis, one at pistillate anthesis. Staminate inflorescence about 83 cm long. Prophyll 6.5 cm long, lavender to yellow with light brown scales. Peduncular bract 33.5 cm long, yellowish cream where enclosed and brown where exposed, additional peduncular bract 15.5 cm, bright yellow with dense covering of brown scales where enclosed, drying light brown. Peduncle 53 cm long, light yellowish green, densely covered by reddish brown scales. Rachillae 30 cm long. Pistillate inflorescence about 86 cm long. Prophyll dark brown on exposed parts, bright yellow where enclosed, splitting apically. Peduncular bract about 64 cm long, thin chartaceous, light brown, with scattered scales. Peduncle 86.5 cm long, light green, densely covered by velvet brown scales. Rachillae about 41 cm in length. Additional material: 1) a portion of the staminate spike pickled, 2) terminal 7 cm of pistillate spike pickled, and 3) fruit pickled. Nom. vern.: "Malo" (apau talkplace)
