| Field notes | Terrestrial herb in dense clump. Leafy shoot up to 1 m long. Rhizomes small, to 3.2 by 1.5 cm, brown outside, white inside. Roots many, white, to 6 mm diameter. Sheath white in lower part, green in upper part, to 40 cm long. Sheath glabrous with membranous margin ending in membranous bilobed ligule. Ligule 7 mm long. Petiole channelled, winged, green, glabrous, to 16 mm long. Lamina oblong, plicate, green, glabrous above, lighter green, hairy beneath, to 45 by 17 cm, base oblique, rounded in older leaves to slightly acute in younger leaves, apex acuminate. Inflorescence central, up to 22 cm long. Fertile or lower bracts yellowish green with light green stripe, obtuse, round. Coma bracts subtend flowers, light purple sometimes with green stripes, hairy above and beneath. Flowers orange. Ovary cream. Calyx membranous. Corolla tube yellow. Lobes orange membranous. Labellum orange slightly bilobed. Lateral staminodes a bit clasping. Stamen pale yellow. Filament pale yellow, darker yellow at apex. Stigma cream. Local name: Boce (Bugis and Makassar language). Uses: young inflorescence used for cooking. |
