| Locality | Municipio of Santa Cruz Cabrália, Estacao Ecológica do Pau Brasil, 16-17 km W of Porto Seguro and 47 km E of Eunápolis on BR 367. Preserved coastal rain forest and some secondary growth forest with a lateritic clay soil, 40-50 m elevation. Terrain very flat on the eastern side of the preserve but quite deeply dissected by streams on the western side. |

| Field notes | Buri is the common name. Solitary palm with 4 m x 15 cm trunk. 12-15 LEAVES in crown, spirally arranged and spreading. Leaf petiole 10-20 cm with smooth margins and concave-convex in transection but with a fibrous leaf sheath. Leaf rachis 247-264 cm. 96-123 pairs of pinnae which are distributed in clusters of 2-12 along the rachis in several planes with smaller clusters at the base and larger clusters near the tip. Middle pinnae 52-71 cm x 4.3-5.5 cm. Androgynous interfoliar INFRUCTESCENCE with 25+ cm peduncle and overall dimensions of fruit cluster measuring 55 cm x 11 cm. 1 rachilla same as rachis with lower part androgynous and upper staminate. Peduncular bract 92-102 cm including a beak of 5-6 cm and the expanded or inflated part of the bract species occasional in this area. |
