| Field notes | Palmeira or Babacu is the common name. Solitary palm with 6-7 m x 35cm trunk. 20-25 leaves in crown, spirally arranged and strongly ascending. Leaf petiole 150 cm with smooth margins but with thick strong fibers on the leaf sheath and concave-convex in transection. Leafrachis 632-648 cm. 177-186 pairs of pinnae which are distributed evenly along the rachis in one plane. Only 7-8 pinnae clustered at the base of the leaf which is sometimes asymmetric. Middle pinnae 96-117 cm x 5.6-6.8 cm. Staminate interfoliar inflorescence with 60 cm peduncle and 83-98 cm rachis. numerous rachillae with a lenght of 12-22 cm. Peduncular bract 175-210 cm including an unusually long beak of 48-60 cm and a bract width of 23-25 cm. Yellowish staminate flowers up to 20 mm in lenght with 10-12 mm long stamens. Palm species common in this area, but being cut out because they are thought to harbor Hemiptera responsible for transmitting Chagas disease |
