| Field notes | Herb 4 m high. Cultivated. Vernacular spanish name: maíz, quichua name: sara. Use: is the Saraguro-indians most important food plant. The dry corn is boiled and eaten at every main dish (mote). The corn flour is eaten as tortilla, in sweet porridge (colada), in pâte boiled in the maizeleaves or in the leaves of "vicondo" (Bromeliaceae). Food for the cattle: stems and leaves are used. |
