| Field notes | Maasai name: orkujita onyokie (orkujita ~ grass, onyokie ~ to be red). Collected for nutrition analyses. It is good until September, while it is still growing and green, after it becomes very poor. Right now it is an important grass for the cattle, as it dominate the area, where they are kept. From September the cattle are kept in higher altitude where "orbo" and "olopi kidong'oi" are the important species. Ticks transmitting East Coast Fever"enticana" live on this species, particularly in the rain season, which are a big threat to calves, but not to cows from highland as they have gained immunity. |
