| Field notes | Scrambler, flowers white. Maasai name: olekesonge / (ole ~ the one, which is used, kisujie ~ snuff, refers to the smashed leaves provokes sneezing) or engesung'i olenarrio ( ~ snuff, arrio ~ nickname for hyena). Used to provoke vomiting by malaria, to reduce bile and "engenja ongutuloi" (~ mouth disease), an uncommon disease, where one is suffering from a lot of jelly in the stomach, which can last up to one month. 6-7 roots 20 cm long and 1 cm thick is boiled in 1 litre of water for 15 minutes and drunk, after half an hour pure water can be drunk and a finger in the throat might be necessary to provoke vomiting. To remove fleas among calves, a plant bundle c. 30 cm long and 15 cm thick is extracted in water and used immediately to washing. The portion suits for 10 calves. |
