| Field notes | Shrub, flowers purple, fruits purple. Maasai name: armagirigirianie orok (big) emagirigirianie narok (small) (often pronounced armagrigirani). Fruits are eaten by herd boys. Used for construction of the walls af hut, to plaster the cattle dung on. Is used in accordance advice of "oloiboni" (a.o. medicinal specialist) to increase the number of cattle: A new fire is started and a lot of "armagirigirianie" together with four fingertips of "entasimi" (medicinal powder prepared by "oloiboni") is burned. The fire is blessed and people start to go around in a ring, one start to sing, the others join, ended with new blessing. All women take a stick with fire from the fire and carry to their huts to start a new fire. Koto kunyinya Nailole (called Ngilole), traditional midwife, Olmekeke: Decoction of plant is used to wash women after delivery. She bathes when it suits her in the hut in the room used to keep cattle and goats during nights. Plant species selected in accordance to tradition. Meshuko ole Mapi, oloiboni, mkidong'i-clan, living in Buti close to Makuyuni: Used for firewood in a fire, called "olokor" to increase the number of cattle and to protect the cattle against "oloirobi" (foot and mouth disease) and human against "oloirobi". "Armagirigirianie" might be used together with fuel wood of "oloirrien" and always with "entasimi" which might be made of "enainsongoyon" or "naianguyu". Next morning the ashes of the fire is mixed with cattle dung and smeared on the cattle form head to tail along backbone. Olootaosirwa ole Mako, oloiboni living in Piaya: It is always used to burn. It can be used for "cleaning" purpose, and without any specific problems. It can for example be burned in the centre of boma, so the cattle can breathe in the smoke. "entasimi" might be burned together with it, the kind of "entasimi" depend on what the stones in the "oloiboni's" horn or calabash, called "enkidong'" shows. |
