Field notes Perennial herb. 1.5-1.7 m. Rhizome short creeping, 10 cm between each leafy shoot, more than 30 shoots per plant. Rhizome 1-1.5 cm in diameter, rhizome scales reddish, no stilt roots. Leafy shoots with 3-7 leaves, base 2.5-3cm in diameter. Sheaths when fresh reddish-brown, ciliate, particularly at the margins. Ligule 13 mm densely ciliate margins in diameter, not bi-lobed. Petiole 4-8cm, glabrous. Lamina (18)30-40 x (8)10-12cm, widest point above the middle, glabrous above, median corrugated; lower surface glabrous. Dark green above, slightly lighter below. Apex acuminate, base more or less equal and attenuate. Peduncle 2cm arising from rhizome, subterranean with pale reddish, ciliate bracts 1 x 2cm. Inflorescence 7 x 3.5cm. Sterile bracts few 3-4 x 2-1.5cm, distichous, olive green at apex, reddish margins, white at base. Fertile bracts 4 x 1.3cm olive green at apex, greenish-red at mid turning reddish and finally white at base. Bracteole c. 2cm pale red tubular with a slit to about the middle. Calyx c. 5cm, white at base, green apex, slit to about the middle, 3-piliferous 8mm yellow. Corolla tube white, lobes white with yellow tips. Lateral petals 3.7 x 0.5cm. Dorsal petal 3.3 x 0.3cm. Labellum white 2.3 x 1.7 cm, margin entire. Margin of basal lobes bent and folded around anther. Anther crest bi-lobed 1mm long. Anther 9 x 3 mm. Filament c. 5mm. Thecae dehiscing from base to 6mm up. Ovary 3mm ciliate. Style filiform. Stigma dark brownish-red with a hairy slit. Specimen including flowers in alcohol deposited at SAN. DNA leaf sample available at the Botanical Institute, University of Copenhagen (C573).
