| Field notes | Tree, to 45 m tall, 80 cm diameter with small buttresses. Bark smooth lenticellate, pale brown, becoming scalylenticellate; inner bark pale brown; wood pale yellow. Branches on saplings horizontal, somewhat grouped in tiers on the stem. Leaves long-elliptic to obovate, margin wavy, to 55 cm long, 20 cm wide, midrib on lower surface densely covered with pale long appressed hairs, apex abruptly caudate. Stipules encircling the twig, large, rapidly drying purple-brown, with tufts at pale brown hairs scattered on the outer side. Fruits roughly globose, 5-shouldered, 3-5 cm across when mature, the calyx cup completely enclosing the nut, purplish brown with coarse lenticels all over, with 5 short calyx teeth (each about i cm long, ovate) atthe apex. Remains of corolla on some fruit with narrowly obovate lobes about 3 cm long and pale velvety hairy on outer surface. |
