Field notes Old male individual with a single, procumbent and partly subterrenean stern, app. 20 cm in diam., block and rough., the. upright part with persistent leafbases to the ground. Leaf bases first sheathing, later splitting to the base, marginally with fibrous mesh; petiole app. 50 cm long and 7 cm in diam.; leaf lamina 4.5 m long pinnately divided in 79 pinnae on each side, inserted regularly, in one plane; leaf rachis recurved distally, twisted, subapical pinnae vertical; pinnae opposite distally and proximally, alternate centrally; apicalmost pinna 15 X 1 cm; central pinnae large-It', to 55 X 5 cm; basalmost pinna split in two pinnulae, one brood and one narrow, both pointing in distal direction and thus crossing the neighboring pinnae. Old staminate inflorescence past anthesis prophyll flattened tubular, bicarinate app. 60 cm long and 12 cm in widest diam., woody, smooth, brown to greenish-brown, splitting apically; sheathing bract bicarinate, app. 50 cm long, splitting to the middle abaxially, coriaceous, smooth, beige to yellow inside, brown outside; peduncle app. 30 cm long, ovate in crosssection, 4.5'; 2.5 cm, with one cuspidate, wrinkled, sterile bract laterally, app. 9 cm long and 6 cm wide basally; rachis L;0 cm long and 7 cm in diam. centrally, with numerous sessile flowers, the middle-sized ones with 190 stamens; tepals reduced to a narrow rim; receptacle lens-shaped to ovate.Common name Entire plant: "Yarina"; the fruits: "Pullupunta The leaves are used to thatch houses. Only a single individual was observed in the entire population with leaves persistent to the ground and thus not exploited for roofing
