| Field notes | Plant with inflorescence to 4 m tall when mature; leaves basal, with spiny margins; flowers enclosed in pubescent bracts; flowers dull navy blue, anthers yellow-orange. The leaf bases are edible but the fibrous material should be spit out after masticating to extract the juices. The pith of the plant can be used as a source of water when one is in the field. If the inflorescence is cut (topped) when about 50 cm tall, then about 15 days later the basal part of the plant can be extracted and eatern. this is called "Capár" which is as sweet as honey according to the local people in El Angel.
