Field notes Plant 4 m tall. Trunk bearing strong spines. Buds several to many per stem, obtuse. Flowers (measurements from 2, not fully opened flws. on post-collected stems), 6.5-7 cm long, 5.5 cm wide at limb, narrowly funnelform. Pericarpel 19 mm wide. Entire receptacle (floral tube and pericarpel) 4 cm long, 16-20 mm wide at middle, slightly compressed, wall 6 mm wide, inner 2 mm of the wall white in cross section, outer 4 mm of the wall green. Bracts fairly large in in lower part of flower (to 1 cm long and 6 mm wide), appressed, fleshy, and red-brown at base, reflexed and black at apex. Podaria conspicuous, green, to 2 cm long and 8 mm wide. Sepapoids to 24 mm long, spatulate, rounded, fleshy and green at base, reddish-white at apex, more strongly reflexed than petaloids. Petaloids 15-25, 18-23 mm long, 6-9 mm wide, white, spatulate, rounded and finely mucronate. Ovarium 7-9 mm wide, 6-7 mm long. Nectaries covering a zone 7-12 mm long. Style 44 mm long, 1.5 mm wide, greenish at base, otherwise white. Stigmas 10-12, 11-12 mm long, cream. Bracts fleshy and appressed in lower part, black and withered at apex, recurrent into prominent green podaria, these to 2 cm long and 8 mm wide. Filaments 12-20 mm long, the lower ones declinate. Anthers 4 mm long, whitish. Liquid material and box coll. available at AAU.
