| Field notes | Vegetative stem conical globose, 21 cm wide, 21 cm tall. Ribs 17, to 2.5 cm high and 4 cm wide. Cephalium 7.5 cm wide, 4.5 cm high, with red-brown bristles and a white center at apex. Flowers pink. Fruits pink with unripe seeds. A single plant observed with cephalium but other plants surely grow on inaccesible cliffs. Several young individuals also observed. According to a peasant farmer the plant is collected and sold on a local market for 2 dollars each and cephalium bearing plants have become rare. Vernacular name: San Pedrillo. |
