| Field notes | Columnar, ascending, branching from laying or damaged stems, 0.5 m high. Stems 0.5-1.5 m long, 4-7 (-10) cm thick. Ribs 12-18. New spines light brown to dark brown. Flower 5.5-8.0 cm long, red, seldom orange, Receptacle covered with white, grey or black hairs. Stigma-lobes greenish. Filament violet. Anther violet, seldom flesh-coloured. Nectar-chamber with lots of nectar. Fruit subglobose, 2-3 (-4) cm in diameter, green to brownish, covered with dark hairs. (C. sepium var. morleyanus (Britton & Rose) J. E. Madsen). |
