| Field notes | To 1 m high. Joints about 5 cm thick. Areoles on hexa- gonal protuberances, oblong, about 5 mm long, 1.5 mm wide, grey. Spines 2-4, 1-2.5 cm long, yellowish white, paler basically. Flower 6-7 cm long. Ovule-chamber 8-14 mm long. Tepals foreward directed, about 2 cm long, red. Style 3 cm long. Stigmas about 8, 6 mm long. Fruit oblong, 7-9 cm long, 5-6 cm in diameter, at first green and spiny, later brown and naked. Seeds light brown. New plants are formed by falling fruits. |
