| Field notes | Tree palm Solitary massive, to 20m tall, dbh 26cm, 20cm am. near crown; internodes 40 cm, grey, fissured, outer wood back, hard, with soft pith. Crown of mature tree with c. 8 green leaves; distal internodes covered in dark indumentum. Top 5 nodes producing inflorescences basipetally. Full sized leaf 4.8m long; sheath 1.5m, petiole absent, c. 20 primary pinnae, the longest c, the 4th from base, to 2m long; 16-25 secondary pinnules on longest pinnae; rachis green; pinnules very leathery. Whole leaf held rather flat with pinnules scarcely pendulous. Infl. massive; peduncle 55cm-, rachis 80cm; -rachillae c. I50-200, green, to 2.15m long; 4 complete bracts incl. the prophyll. Young fruit green, mature red, 2-seeded. |
