| Field notes | Massive solitary monoecious palm, 15-20m tall. Stem at base ca. 1m diam with a large root boss, d.b.h. 35m; trunk conspiciously ringed with oblique leaf scars, stepped, the scars ca. 10cm distant. Leaf to 5m long, petiole/sheath open, not fibrous, epanded, ca. 1.5m long; leaflets ca. 70 on each side of the rachis, very regular, spreading, concolorous. Inflorescence interfoliar, ca. 1.5m long, prophyll ca. 70cm long, 2-keeled; peduncular bract 170cm long, green, deeply and regularly grooved. Young fruit covered in purplish brown scales. Mature fruit found under the parent tree with massively thickened endocarp. See additional notes |
