| Field notes | Solitary squat palm to 5m tall. Stem brown, ca. 20cm diam., closely ringed with leaf scars, covered in tattered leaf bases when young. Crown of ca. 20 marcescent leaves held in a "shuttlecock". Leaf to 4m long; leaf base with two small auricles; petiole absent; leaflets ca. 60 on each side of the rachis, narrow, stiff, green with scattered brown scales. Inflorescences unisexual, but both staninate and pistillate present on the same tree, hidden among the leaf sheaths. Infructescences in immature fruit; cown with two infructescences and one mummified staminate inflorescence with pendulous rachillae. Young fruit purplish. |
