| Field notes | Herb 0.2-1 m. Leaf above green with lighter yellowish green area along midrib. Leaf below, light grey-green. Pulvinus yellow-green. Petiole green above, dark red below. Sheath dark red. Inflorescence usually bearing green sterile bracts above, fertile purple-brown bracts below. Sepals white, corolla tube white, petals white. Outer stamonide pale purple, callose staminode petaloid, similar in shape, pale purple. Cucullate staminode white, apex tinged purple, style and stigma white. Calyx persistent in fruit; capsule pink, apex apressed against sides of calyx, pink. Seeds grey rugose, with white aril. Peduncle may be long or inflorescence nearly sessile.
