| Field notes | Colonial midstory palm. Stem 4.80 m high, 5 cm thick; internodes 13 cm long, > stem diameter, brown, smooth. Base of stem with 25 visible roots, 12 cm long, 0.5 cm thick. Leaves 9 per stem; sheath 25 cm long, open, with 3 cm long black spines; petiole 35 cm long, section round, with 7 cm long black spines; rachis 160 cm long, with 3-5 cm long black spines; lamina pinnate, 230 cm long, 80 cm wide, bushy, glabrous, white abaxially; pinnae 40 per side, insertion irregular; basal pinna 40 cm long, middle pinna 45 cm long, apical pinna 20 cm long. Infructescence infrafoliar; peduncular bract 30 cm long, woody, with 2.5 cm long, black spines; rachis 15 cm long, 1.5 cm wide; rachillae 30, 10-15 cm long.
