| Field notes | Cespitose understory palm. Stem 0.8 m high, 1.5 cm thick; internodes 5 cm long, > stem diameter, smooth, covered by leaf bases. Leaves 5 per stem; sheath 11.5 cm long, closed, with 1.5 cm long, black spines; petiole 23 cm long; rachis 17 cm long; lamina entire, bifid, 33 cm long, 17.5 cm wide, flat, hairy. Inflorescence infrafoliar; prophyll 5 cm long, 0.8 cm wide, papery; peduncular bract 12.5 cm long, inserted 0.5 cm from base, brown, woody, with 0.4 cm long, black spines; peduncle 6 cm long, 0.6 cm wide, with 0.1 cm long, black spines; rachillae 2 per rachis, 5-6,5 cm long.
