| Field notes | Stem 4 m tall, 3-5 cm diameter at base; internodes grey, smooth, 5-6 cm long at base of stem, shorter apically. Leaves 5, erect with bent rachis and pinnae inserted in a 45 degree angle and arranged in one plane on each side of the rachis, but the two sides forming a narrow V-shaped channel; the sheaths forming a swollen section 35x7 cm of reticulate fibres; petiole 22 cm long, red at base, becoming green; blade 70x55 cm, ca 15 pinnae per side. Infructescence just below the leaves, or included in the lower leafbases, 50 cm long, peduncle 22 cm, 2 x branched, reddish. This species is abundant in the stunted forest and absent in the tall shaded forest. 2000-2500 m. |
