| Field notes | Cespitose tree to 5 m tall; stem 3,5 cm diam.; internodes 5-6 cm long, densely covered with downwards pointing up to 10 cm long black spines; leaves 5, distichous, spreading; sheath densely covered with spines, closed at base; petiole densely spiny, 25 cm long; lamina 80x47 cm with 47 pinnae per side, in 7-8 groups of 5-6. Inflorescence interfoliar; two old wilted ones and one in bud. At this locality this species is rare and we saw it only in one place. The station manager Eduardo Cueva - who often walks this trail - had not noticed it before. 2000 m altitude. |
