| Field notes | Solitary. Stem 6 m tall, 18 cm in diam near base, slightly thicker at middle, ca. 13 cm at apex, white due to a thick layer of wax, greenish toward apex, internodes 4-12 cm long, roughly parallel and horizontal. Leaves 17 in the crown, somewhat erect; sheath 150 cm long, green but covered with a thick brown indument, 30 cm at apex appearing like a petiole, with fibrous margins; petiole 40 cm long, 6 cm wide at apex, adaxially flattened, with sharp margins, green, abaxially convex, green but covered with an indumentum of silvery scales; rachis 250-264 cm, adaxially green flattened for 140 proximal cm, thereafter acute, abaxially convex, green, with a silvery indument towards base in young leaves; pinnae 150-151 on each side irregularly arranged in groups of 1-4 (-7). the groups very close to each other, basal and apical pinnae almost regularly arranged, pinnae of each group arranged in dihherent planes, the proximal one of each group slightly ascending, the distal one slightly descending, the apical 1/2 if each pinnae pendulous, towaerd the leaf apex the rachis rotates axially, and pinnae therfore appear vertical, all pinnae silvery below. Inflorescence (male) interfoliar, rachis 79 cm long, cream colored like the rachillae and the flowers; rachillae 93, the longest one 31 cm long. |
