Field notes Solitary. Stem 13.7 m tall, 35 cm in diam at 80 cm from base, 30 cm in diam at 5.7 m from base, and 15 cm in diam at apex, green but covered with a thin layer of greyish wax and therefore appearing whitish. Leaves 15 in the crown; sheath 90 cm long, 30 cm wide at base, covered with a brown indument, ca. 40 cm at apex narrower and appearing like the petiole; petiole 50 cm long, 5 cm wide at apex adaxially flattened and slightly raised along the center, the edges very sharp, the adaxial side of the petiole appearing purple in old leaves; rachis 165-171 cm long, straight but slightly curved near apex, adaxially flattened for proximal 60-64 cm, triangular in cross section thereafter; pinnae 82-84 on each side, regularly arranged in one plane, slightly ascending, 5-6 apical pinnae connate along their margins for a distance beyond their midlle, all pinnae in the leaf very closely inserted to each other, strongly plicate along midrib, dark green above, conspicuously ferrugineous beneath, the leaf remarkably brown below when seen from a distance. Infructescence interfoliar, 5 with ripe fruits; prophyll 40-42 cm long, 13-15 cm wide, bicarinate, adaxially and abaxially open; peduncular bracts 4, inserted basally along 33 cm of the peduncle, 85-170 cm long, ca. 12 cm wide, opening laterally along alternate sides, a 5th very short bract inserted about 20 cm below the peduncle apex; peduncle 127 cm long, 2.5 cm in diam at apex, dorsiventrally compressed, with a thick ferrugineous indument; rachis 74 cm long, green; rachillae 52, branched into the 2nd order, the longest rachillae 45 cm, inserted somewhat below the rachis middle. Ripe fruits orange red, some of them globose, others ovoid, obovoid or oblong. Seeds brown.
