| Field notes | Solitary. Stem 12 m tall, 20 cm in diam, greyish-brown. Leaves 12 in a spherical crown; sheath open, 140 cm long, brown, fibrous at margins, extending up to the rachis base, distal 90 cm resembling a petiole, adaxially flattened, green, 4.5 cm wide at apex, true petiole absent; rachis 290 cm long, green, adaxially flattened for 97 cm; pinnae 159-166 on each side, irregularly arranged in group of (-3) 4-5 (-7), inserted at different angles, the proximal pinnae of each groups erect and pointing somewhat forwards, the distal ones pendulous, all pinnae stiff and distally curved. Inflorescence interfoliar. Peduncular bract 135 cm long, 36 cm wide, woody, grooved; inflorescence cream-colored at anthesis, green in the fruiting stage. Peduncle 38 cm long, 4.5 cm in diam, with large bulgings as though of abortive rachillae; rachis 74 cm long; rachillae 129, the longest at base, up to 52 cm, the apical ones 21 cm long. Ripe fruits yellow. Local name: "chingón". Uses: Split stems are used for fence posts. |
