| Field notes | Caespitose with 4 stems (often solitary). Stem to 8 m tall, 8 cm in diam., greyish, green towards the apex; internodes 2 -7.5 cm long. Leaves 9, spreading; sheath 90 cm long, closed for 54 cm at base triquetrous, 15 cm in diam., green to purplish-brown; petiole 3 cm long, 3.5 cm wide, green, adaxially flattened, adaxially convex; rachis 205 cm long, adaxially flattened for 86 cm, purplish when young, abaxially convex to flattened, green with cream coloured indument; pinnae 45 -47 on each side, patulae but the leaves are bent to one side and then apical pinnae vertical; basal pinnae 40 cm long, 0.2 -0.5 cm wide, middle pinnae 66 cm long, 5 cm wide, apical one 25 cm long, 7 cm wide. Inflorescence infrafoliar, 5 at same stage (with fruits); peduncle 9.5 cm long, 3 cm in diam at apex; rachis 32 cm long, reddish; rachillae 50, the longest one 58 cm, reddish with mature fruits; mature fruits black, globose. Vernacular name: "Palmito". The palm heart is edible. Locally very abundant. |
