Field notes Trunk to 4 m tall, 6 cm in diam below leaves, light brown. Leaves 8 spreading, sheath and petiole 45-78 cm long, open to the base, with thick brown indument, petiole flat above, rounded below, 2.5 cm wide below the blade. Rachis 105-175 cm long, rounded below, flat above at base, angled above from middle upwards; pinnae ca. 15 per side, unevenly wide, each with 1-15 primary nerves, apical pinnae with up to 20 primary nerves (no. of nerves per pinnae 6-3-3-1-1-4-4-8-2-7-6-15-4-3-17). Pinnae very slightly erect. Inflorescence infrafoliar; peduncle 21-25 cm long, 4 cm wide, dorsiventrally flattened, green, with wooly light brown indument. Rachis 68-70 cm long, green becoming red with age. Rachillae 17, basal rachillae 55 cm long (=longest) rachillae to 2nd order (3 x branched). Flowers with white stamens and lilac filaments. Fruits (immature) 8 mm long, 6 mm wide. Leaves used for thatch. Trunk used as axe handles. Thatch last for 3 years. N.v.: Macana.
