| Field notes | Cespitose with 4 stems, growing in rootmound to 60 cm wide and 1 m tall, but others seen with mounds to 2 m tall and 1.5 m wide. Roots ca. 1 cm diam. Stem 8-9 m tall, 14 cm diam at base, 8 cm diam below crown; the base grey, smooth or longitudinally fissured without obvious nodes; the top with obvious nodes ca. 4 cm apart. Crown of 9 spreading leaves with pendulous pinnae; crownshaft conspicous, yellow green, 100 cm long, 13 cm wide; petiole 26 cm long, 3 cm wide below, rounded below, shallowly channeled above, with sharp margins between the two sides, with a dense cover of black scales; blade 220 x 140 cm (note pendulous pinnae); pinnae 2 x 45; basal pinna 55 x 0.4 cm, middle pinna 67 x 4.5 cm, apical pinna 31 x 2 cm; rachis rounded below, the base channelled above, otherwise ridged above, covered with black scales similar to those on petiole. Inflorescence infrafoliar, pointing upwards at an angle of 45 degrees with rachillae sticking out to all sides; the base almost completely encircling the stem, scar from prophyll 4 cm from base; scar from peduncular bract 6 cm from base; peduncle 7 cm long, 4 cm wide, dorsiventrally flattened, with mealy cream to brown indument; rachis 45 cm, tapering to the tip; rachillae ca. 150 cm, basal ones 75 cm long, apical ones 45 cm long, cream white with mealy indumentum of same color; flowers in triads except the apical 10 cm of rachillae which have only male flowers, flowers bright red contrasting the rachis and rachillae color. Inflorescence bud removed from lowest leafsheath; prophyll green, 100 x 10 cm, smooth with a few brown scales, bicarinate; peduncular bract 90 x 8 cm, linear lanceolate, apiculate, dorsiventrally flattened with round margins. |
