| Field notes | Understory palm, erect or procumbent, rooting and producing adventitious shoots at the nodes. Stem to 1.5 m long, 0.5 - 1 cm thick; internodes 3 - 7 cm long, smooth, brown, slightly thinner towards the base. Crown of 5 to 7, erect and spreading leaves; sheath 6 - 8 cm long, green, smooth, completely encircling the stem; petiole ca. 5 cm long, rounded below, flat above, with rounded margins between the two surfaces; blade entire, bifid 30 x 20 cm. Inflorescence infrafoliar pointing upwards at an angle of 45°; prophyll inserted 1 cm from the base of the peduncle 6 cm long, 0.7 cm wide, bicarinate; peduncular bract inserted 2 cm from base of peduncle, 8 cm long, pointed, round in cross section; peduncle 3 cm long, rounded and slightly dorsiventrally compressed; rachis 2.5 cm long; rachillae 9, spreading, 5 - 7 cm long, the entire inflorescence bright red in bud, anthesis and fruiting; flowers red with anthers of contrasting yellow color; fruit 0.9 x 0.8 cm, dark purplish black.
