| Field notes | Caespitose, to 7 m tall with 8 stems. Each stem erect and ascending, ca. 3 cm in diam., internodes ca. 4 cm long with a ring of spines to 4 cm long below each node, most well developed below the leaf. Crown of ca. 5 spreading leaves. Sheath of inner most leaf cylindric 40 cm long with 14 cm long "ligula" which surrounds the inner leaves.Sheath densely covered with spines, petiole 20 - 30 cm, rounded without large spines but covered with soft castaneous indument. Blade 150 x 100 cm with 2 x 30 pinnae; basal pinnae 35 x 4 cm, middle pinnae 55 x 4, top pinnae 36 x 4 cm, straight with spiny margins, acuminate tips; rachis rounded below, ridged above, with soft brown indument, more so in young leaves.Two infructescences below the crown. Prophyll 22 x 5 cm, bicarinate. Peduncular bract 35 cm long with fine spines outside. Peduncle 18 cm long rounded, with soft spiny indument, 1.5 cm thick. Rachis 5 cm long. Rachillae 14, longest one 11 cm long; fruits spherical with apical acumen, 3 cm in diam. Duplicates: AAU, QCA, COL, Fairchild. Dupl. 4. |
