| Field notes | Trees with 2 types of inflorescence on same individual, purely staminate or mixed male and female. Stem solitary, erect, 12 m tall, 50 cm diam; no roots visible, nodes 18 cm apart. Leaves 25; petiole absent; sheath 280 cm long, open to base, rounded below, shallowly channelled above, with fibrous margins with to 112 cm long fibers; rachis rounded below, above, 6 m long; pinnae evenly spaced and all in one plane, 168, apical 81 x 3 cm, middle 160 x 10 cm, basal one 69 x 1 cm, strongly reduplicate. An entire staminate inflorescence on the ground without flowers: peduncle 130 x 7 cm, dorsiventrally compressed, prophyll persistent, becoming fibrous with age, 110 cm long, 21 cm wide at base, becoming narrower and rounded at apex adaxially; peduncular bract inserted at base of peduncle, sheathing peduncle and closed for 1 m, open and cucullate for 190 cm, brown, deeply striate on outside, apiculate and closed for 55 cm; rachis 145 cm long, tapering; rachillae ca. 1000, each substended by a 4 mm apiculate bract; flowers borne on lower sides of rachillae only. Ripe fruits orange colored, to 6 x 3 cm, with brownish hairs. |
