Field notes Stem solitary, erect, grey, with scattered lenticels? ( giving a rough feel ), 22 m long, 14 cm diam. at base, 20 cm diam. at apex, nodes 8 cm apart at base, supported by an open cone of 30 stilt roots, spiny, 95 x 4 5 cm. Leaves 5; old ones persistent and hanging down around flowers; sheaths forming a distinct crownshaft 90 cm long, greyish-green; petiole 30 cm long with a 38 cm ligule, densely reddish-brown tomentose, flat above round below, 3 cm diam; rachis 220 cm long, ridged above with dense rusty red tomentum, rounded and green below without red tomentum; pinnae 23 per side, basal one 51 x 12 cm, middle one 95 x 10 cm, apical ( entire ) one 43 x 35, all in one plane and pendulous. Inflorescence buds one per node one at staminate anthesis, another solitary bud staminate. Peduncle 25 x 3 cm, white, fleshy with prophyll and 5 bracts ( upper one incomplete), 4 - 5 cm apart; rachis 27 cm long; rachillae 37, 14 - 8 cm long. N.v. 'Pambil'. Uses. Stems are cut and sent to Ibarra for making rooves.
