| Field notes | Stem solitary, erect, 12 m tall, 30 cm diam. at base, 16 cm diam. at apex, greyish-brown, covered with mosses, supported by a cone of 20 spiny stiltroots 2 m x 6 cm, brownish; leaves 6; sheaths forming a distinct grey-green crownshaft 280 cm long; petiole 55 cm long, round, green with white-grey tomentum; rachis 310 cm long; pinnae 17 per side, divided into (from base) 2-4-4-5-6-6-8-9-8-9-9-8-8-5-5-3-2 segments, these arranged loosely in 4 planes and not arching at the apex, golden-brown below, basal pinna 81 x 10 cm, middle pinna (largest segment) 113 x 31 cm, apical pinna 47 x 31 cm. Inflorescence infrafoliar, pendulous, just past staminate anthesis; covered with thousands of insects; infructescence pendulous; peduncle 41 cm long, 8 cm diam., green; rachis 28 cm long; rachillae 12, 79 81 cm long, 1.5 - 2 cm diam. at middle. Two staminate flowers from base of rachillae with 96 and 103 stamens, middle rachillae flowers with 85 and 87 stamens; apex of rachillae flowers with 64 and 53 stamens. 2 - 3 small insect larvae inside stamens or receptacle. Trifid pistillode present. |
