Field notes Stem solitary supported by cone of closely spaced stiltroots up to 70 cm long and 4 cm thick, covered with blunt projections. Stem 12 cm diam. at base, 11 cm diam. at apex, grey from lichens and covered with mosses and bromeliads, smooth, internodes ca. 10 cm long at apex, stem 8 m tall; leaves 6; sheaths forming a 2 m long greyish-green crownshaft swollen at the base; leaves spreading, drooping at tip; petiole 20 cm long, rounded below, channelled above; rachis 280 cm long, rounded below, ridged above, densely brown tomentose especially above. Pinnae 30 per side, divided into (from base) 3-5-7-7-7-7-7-7-7-7-7-7-7-7-7-7-7-7- 7-5-2-4-6-4-1-4-2-2-1-1 segments; segments leaving the rachis at different angles, some pendulous, some erect. Inflorescence buds 9 - 10 - 11 per node, emerging from a pronounced 2 cm wide 'rim' around scem. Staminate inflorescence with peduncle terete, 15 x 3 cm, white, fleshy; prophyll tubular, 9 x 6 cm; 1st peduncular bract 12 cm long, tubular; 2nd peduncular bract 10 cm long, tubular; 3rd and 4th peduncular bract splitting abaxially, both ca. 30 cm long; all bracts purplish brown becoming green brown, all inserted 2 - 3 cm apart on peduncle; rachis 30 cm long, tapering; rachillae spirally arranged, 64, from 6 cm long proximately to 2 cm long distally, densely covered with diads or solitary staminate flowers, these creamy white; piscillate inflorescence with similar prophyll, bracts and peduncle to staminate; infructescence pendulous, peduncle terete, 35 x 4 cm rachis 30 cm long, rachillae 50, spirally arranged, 6 x 3 cm, flattened, covered with female flower scars. 882 fruits. N.v.: "Tontamo"
