Field notes Solitary. Base with 60 cm high cone of 4 cm thick adventitious roots. Stem ca. 10 m tall, 10 cm diam. at base, 8 cm diam. at top, grey smooth, with densely inserted nodes. Crownshaft 89 cm long, green, slightly swollen at base. Leaves 6, spreading. Petiole 17 cm long, terete, green with brown tomentum. Rachis 217 cm long, rounded below, ridged above, green with fine brown tomentum. Pinnae entire, all in one plane, 22 per side, basal pinna 45 x 10 cm, middle pinna 106 x 10 cm, apical pinna 44 x 11 cm. Inflorescences 5 per node, central one pistillate. Peduncle erect and then bending away from stem, 18 cm long, green where exposed. Peduncular bracts 5, lower 3 tubular and sheathing, upper two open. Rachis absent. Rachillae 4, 12 cm long, densely covered with angular, stiffly pubescent fruits. Siona: Wi-ni-co (Victoriano Cuollo). Use: Thatch for houses. Fruits eaten by two species of pigs (sajino) and by monkeys (Churuco, Lagothrix lagothrichia).
