| Field notes | Solitary. Fibrous mass of thin roots at base, 30 cm long. Stem 6.5 m tall, 7 cm diam. at base, smooth, nodes apart at the base. Leaves ca. 15, sheath margins forming a fibrous humus filled clump at the base of the crown, sheath 45 cm long, open to the base (outer ones at least); petiole ca. 20 cm, rounded below, flat above, reddish; rachis rounded below, ridged above, reddish 110 cm long; pinnae 7 per side, subequal with 6 - 12 main veins, evenly and alternately inserted, sigmoid, arranged in one plane, basal pinna 70 x 8 cm, middle pinna 77 x 15 cm, apical pinna 70 x 15 cm. nflorescences many, solitary to the node, erect amongst a lot of garbage in the base of the crown; peduncle 14 cm long 3 cm wide, slightly dorsiventrally flattened; rachis virtually absent; rachillae 9 very closely spaced up to 39 cm long, (in some inflorescences much shorter and thicker, may be deformed?) prophyll 39 cm long, very fibrous, peduncular bract inserted very close to prophyll, 48 cm long, also very fibrous, splitting to reveal closely bunched rachillae. |
