| Field notes | Solitary tree (maybe cespitose). Stem ca. 5 m tall 10 cm diam., with ca. 20 cm long nodes, densely covered with fierce, black spines to 10 cm long. Leaves ca. 10, spreading. Sheath and petiole not separated, ca. 110 cm long, surrounding the stem at their base, gradually tapering to 4 cm wide, rounded and finely spiny below, channeled and smooth above with a sharp margin between the two surfaces. Rachis 190 cm long, rounded and spiny below, above channelled on the 40 most basal cm, then edged in the middle. Pinnae 117 per side, inserted irregularly in groups of 3 - 5, diverging from the rachis in different directions so the blade is not flat, basal pinna 45 x 1.5 cm, middle pinna 60 x 3 cm, upper pinna 30 x 1.5 cm. Infructescences 4, inserted below the crown, prophyll 20 x 10 cm, dorsiventrally flattened with lateral wing, adaxially smooth, abaxially with fine spines. Sterile bract one, 70 x 17 cm, persistent as a roof over the inflorescence, narrowing smoothly from above the middle towards the base and top, top acute, outside with dense cover of ca.1 cm long spines, inside smooth. Peduncle bending sidewards out from the stem, 22 cm long, round, ca. 2.5 cm thick, green with fine spines, rachis 23 cm long, rachillae ca. 50, 28 - 18 cm, with green, acuminate fruits ca. 1 cm diam. . |
